“Unfortunately, that did not work out and this year again we have been told that there is no spot available on the gifted program," Awasthi said. “Atharv has been identified as a gifted student via the assessment that all schools in Ontario follow," Awasthi told BarrieToday. "Gifted students are placed in a separate classroom to ensure their needs - such as accelerated learning/ need for additional challenge - are fulfilled."Īwasthi says her son's assessment as “highly gifted” by the York board means that he is above the 98th percentile among his peers.Īfter visiting the school in their neighbourhood, she said they were informed there simply was no “room” for Atharv in the gifted program, so they opted instead to have him continue online with the York board's gifted program in the hope that over the course of the year a spot in Barrie would open up. He had been identified as “highly gifted” by the York Region District School Board when he was in Grade 3, just prior to the move north.
The family moved to north-end Barrie in March 2021 and had hoped to place their son, Atharv, into the Simcoe County District School Board’s gifted program.
